As the Head of System Modelling and Mission Analysis (SMMA) at Orbex, you will lead the SMMA department focused on the design, analysis, and performance assessment of Orbex’s Prime and Proxima launch vehicles, driving end-to-end system simulation and mission-level analysis across satellite, launch vehicle, and interplanetary mission portfolios. In this role, you will manage a multidisciplinary team of systems engineers, simulation architects, and mission analysts to develop physics-based and functional models, perform trade studies, and deliver insights that shape the future of space exploration. Key responsibilities include overseeing the development of integrated models for launch systems and GSE, leading mission analysis activities such as trajectory design, orbital mechanics, and flight safety analysis, applying system models to support trade studies for spacecraft architecture and mission optimization, and establishing advanced modelling toolchains with tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, GMAT, STK, FreeFlyer, ModelCenter, and SysML. You will work closely with internal teams including systems integration, propulsion, structures, avionics, and operations, while also interfacing with external stakeholders and customers. Required experience includes significant expertise in space systems engineering, mission analysis, or aerospace simulation, with proven leadership in technical management, trajectory optimization, and mission planning. Preferred qualifications include a Master’s or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Astrodynamics, or Physics, deep knowledge of space system design and mission lifecycle, and prior involvement with ESA, NASA, or commercial new-space initiatives. Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills are essential, along with proficiency in advanced modelling tools and an understanding of digital engineering and Agile workflows. The role is based on-site in Forres, Scotland, at Orbex’s headquarters near the Scottish Highlands, offering opportunities for outdoor adventure alongside professional growth. Applicants must be UK or European citizens or from MTCR signatory countries, with BPSS security clearance required. Orbex offers a competitive package including 34 days’ paid holiday, pension, cycle-to-work and electric vehicle schemes, employee assistance programs, life insurance, visa sponsorship for candidates and their families, and full relocation support. Orbex is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion, and values courage, teamwork, communication, and integrity in unlocking space for the future of humanity.
