The Laser Scientist role at STFC’s Central Laser Facility involves contributing to the development of next-generation high-energy femtosecond laser systems designed to drive plasma accelerators and produce compact, high-brightness particle and radiation sources. Working within the Centre for Advanced Laser Technology and Applications (CALTA), the scientist will design optical layouts, model broadband pulse amplification, develop diagnostics, set up prototype systems, and lead installation and experimental testing of high-peak-power lasers operating at unprecedented repetition rates of 100 Hz to 1 kHz, using CLF’s DiPOLE laser amplifier technology. The position includes defining and de-risking key component technologies, collaborating with engineers on mechanical designs, engaging with external suppliers and international research partners, and presenting research at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals. Candidates must have a PhD in physics or a related field, strong knowledge of nonlinear and solid-state laser physics, experience in short-pulse laser design, modelling, and diagnostics, proficiency in tools like Matlab and optical design software, and the ability to work safely in a laser laboratory. STFC offers a collaborative, innovative environment with excellent benefits, flexible working, and Skilled Worker visa sponsorship with potential reimbursement of fees for eligible candidates.
