UKRI’s Central Laser Facility (CLF) at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Harwell, Oxfordshire is offering an exciting opportunity for a Laser Scientist to join the UPLiFT programme—an ambitious £10M government-funded research initiative focused on developing laser inertial fusion energy (IFE) technologies. The successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team tasked with creating efficient, high-energy laser driver concepts using CLF’s DiPOLE multi-slab amplifier technology. This role involves optical design, simulation and modelling of laser subsystems, prototyping and laboratory testing, collaboration with engineers, suppliers, and international experts, and the opportunity to present findings at global conferences. The candidate will support the design of scalable laser architectures, contribute to experimental test campaigns, and help shape the concept of a laser driver suitable for future power plants. Applicants should have a degree or equivalent experience in physics or a closely related subject, knowledge of laser and optical science, hands-on experience with laser systems, and familiarity with modelling tools like Matlab or LabView. The role offers a 1-year fixed-term contract with an intent to extend to 3 years, and includes comprehensive benefits such as a competitive salary (£31,298–£33,472), pension, private health and dental coverage, generous leave, and visa sponsorship for eligible international applicants. The position requires on-site work and may involve laser laboratory activities and collaboration with external facilities. UKRI values diversity, supports inclusion, and guarantees interviews for qualified disabled applicants.
