About the job

Nu Quantum is seeking a Photonics Test Engineer to join their Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) team in Cambridge, UK. The successful candidate will support the development and execution of characterization methodologies for integrated photonic components and quantum devices, ensuring the performance, reliability, and scalability of photonic subsystems that form the backbone of Nu Quantum’s quantum networking infrastructure. Responsibilities include performing characterization of integrated photonic devices, developing and automating test setups with lasers, detectors, fiber alignment stages, signal generators, high-speed electronics, and data acquisition tools, analyzing and interpreting test results to extract device performance metrics, optimizing characterization protocols for new device types and Multi-Project Wafer fabrication runs, documenting test procedures and results, collaborating with design engineers, quantum optics researchers, and electronics engineers to improve device performance, supporting lab infrastructure and operations including equipment maintenance and compliance with health and safety standards, and contributing to continuous improvement of engineering workflows for scalable photonic systems. Applicants should have a postgraduate degree or equivalent experience in Photonics, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with strong hands-on experience characterizing integrated photonic devices, designing and operating optical/electrical test setups, proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, LabVIEW, or MATLAB, and experience with data acquisition and signal processing techniques. Desirable skills include experience with silicon, silicon nitride, lithium niobate, or III-V photonic platforms, single-photon sources and detectors, photonic packaging and fiber coupling, high-speed analog electronics characterization, understanding of photonic foundry processes, and developing scalable automated test frameworks. Visa sponsorship is available for eligible candidates, and the role offers flexible working options, private medical and dental cover, a paid sabbatical after four years of service, generous employee referral schemes, 28 days of annual leave plus public holidays, enhanced family leave policies, and access to the Cambridge Botanical Gardens.
