An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Mechanical Design / Powertrain Systems Engineer based in Derbyshire, UK. The role involves leading the systems-level design and development of internal combustion engine components and subsystems, including diesel and hydrogen technologies. Responsibilities include defining technical specifications, leading DFMEA reviews, coordinating design validation and verification, collaborating with in-house development, test, and manufacturing teams, acting as the senior technical point of contact for suppliers delivering component designs, and providing mentorship and technical leadership to junior engineers. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Motorsport Engineering (or a related field) with a minimum of 10 years of industry experience in powertrain systems design, specifically in base engine systems, and proven expertise in systems engineering for internal combustion engines across applications such as automotive, off-highway, rail, marine, or power generation. Strong knowledge and hands-on experience in one or more of the following systems—valvetrain design (DOHC/SOHC), timing gear systems, crankcase ventilation (CCV), aftertreatment systems (DEF/SCR), fuel systems including hydrogen, and air handling systems (e.g., intake manifolds, throttle bodies)—is required. Proficiency with CAD tools such as Creo or CATIA, experience overseeing validation testing, and collaborating with external suppliers on technical delivery are also essential. This is a full-time, office-based role in Derbyshire, UK, with relocation and visa sponsorship available for the right candidate.
