The Principal Laboratory Research Scientist – Making Lab role at The Francis Crick Institute focuses on designing and developing advanced biomedical research technologies by combining engineering, biology, automation, and software–hardware systems to support world-class scientific research. The position involves creating custom experimental platforms, building new scientific instruments, implementing automation solutions, integrating electronics and mechanical components, optimising lab workflows, and delivering end-to-end technology development for complex research challenges. The scientist will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams across neuroscience, bioengineering, infectious diseases, structural biology, imaging, and computational science to translate research needs into practical engineering solutions. The role also includes mentoring junior engineers, managing prototyping processes, performing CAD design, using Python/Linux or C++ for system control, working with microfluidics, robotics, rapid prototyping tools, and ensuring high-quality, reproducible laboratory operations. This position requires strong problem-solving skills, hands-on engineering expertise, and the ability to innovate within a highly collaborative environment, with visa sponsorship available for eligible candidates.
