About the job

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is hiring a Scientific Software Engineer for a fixed-term role until 31st March 2027, based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Harwell, Oxfordshire. Offering a salary between £56,509 and £62,159 per annum, this role is available as full-time or part-time (minimum 30 hours/week). The position is part of the HiLUX project—a £17M transformation of the ultrafast laser spectroscopy facilities (Artemis and Ultra) at the Central Laser Facility (CLF). This unique open-access facility will enable new methods to study complex systems relevant to biomolecular dynamics, biomedical analysis, energy storage, catalysis, and photovoltaics. As a Scientific Software Engineer, you will develop and support software for data acquisition and analysis across a range of spectroscopy techniques, such as time-resolved infrared, Raman, and photoemission spectroscopy. You will work in Python using scientific packages (e.g., numpy, scipy, pandas), apply methods like PCA and machine learning, and collaborate with scientists, engineers, and software teams. Responsibilities include developing on-the-fly data analysis tools, adapting commercial software, interfacing with EPICS-based control systems, and contributing to cloud-hosted data workflows. Ideal candidates will have a degree in a STEM field, proven experience in software development for data analysis, and knowledge of modern software practices (Agile, CI/CD, testing, OOP). This role includes extensive collaboration with international partners, scientific computing departments, and stakeholders across academia and industry. UKRI supports visa sponsorship and may reimburse some visa-related fees. The role also offers generous benefits including 30 days' annual leave, a pension scheme, flexible working, and access to sports and social activities. Apply online by submitting a CV and a tailored cover letter before August 4, 2025. Reference number: 1052.
