About the job

Monzo Bank is on a mission to make money work for everyone by challenging traditional banking with simple, innovative, and customer-focused solutions. Over the last decade, it has grown from a prepaid card into a full-service digital bank offering personal, joint, business, youth, and kids accounts, alongside credit cards, savings, and investment products, now serving over 12 million UK adults and 600,000 businesses. As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will act as a manager of managers, leading multiple squads of around 20–30 people that include tech leads, engineers, and engineering managers, while building new squads as the organisation expands. This role is accountable for technical and delivery outcomes, fostering engineering excellence, creating inclusive environments, and ensuring high performance while partnering with product, design, and data colleagues in cross-functional teams. Although not a coding role, it requires a strong technical foundation and experience as a software engineer, combined with proven delivery and leadership skills, including managing other managers, driving system design initiatives with senior engineers, and maintaining stakeholder relationships. Monzo is looking for someone who can coach and develop engineering managers, hold teams to a high technical bar, support execution across squads, and contribute to company-wide engineering best practices. The interview process involves an initial recruiter call, an hour-long discussion with a senior leader, and a final loop with three interviews (covering team and org management, system design, and leadership behaviours) plus a reverse interview. The role offers a competitive base salary of £130k–£160k plus equity, benefits, flexible working, visa sponsorship, relocation support, and a £1,000 learning budget, with the option to work remotely in the UK or from the London office. Monzo champions diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring equal opportunities for all applicants, and supports employees in doing the best work of their lives as part of its mission to redefine banking.
