As a Senior Staff Backend Engineer in the Growth collective, you will play a pivotal technical leadership role, partnering with a Senior Engineering Manager and providing guidance across multiple squads of around 20 engineers. You will collaborate with product, data, and operational leaders to identify and execute opportunities aligned with Monzo’s goals, contribute to high-level planning and architectural discussions, and dive into execution where necessary. Your responsibilities include maintaining technical excellence, mentoring engineers, and ensuring robust and optimal solutions for complex systems while driving customer impact. The role involves building growth-focused features, running experiments, and using data-driven decisions to accelerate user acquisition. Monzo’s backend stack includes Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, GCP, React, Feast, and GPT/Vertex models, though prior experience in these is not required. This position offers £140,000–£175,000 base salary plus share options, visa sponsorship, relocation support, flexible working (remote within the UK or hybrid in London), and benefits including a £1,000 annual learning budget, MacBook and home-office setup support, and more. The hiring process includes a recruiter call, initial call, system design interview, coding exercise, and final behavioral/leadership interviews, typically completed within 3–4 weeks.
