Monzo is on a mission to make money work for everyone by moving away from the complicated and confusing ways of traditional banking. After starting as a prepaid card, Monzo has grown significantly in the last 10 years, offering personal and business bank accounts, joint accounts, kids accounts, teen accounts, credit cards, savings, investments, and pensions. Known for its iconic hot coral cards, get-paid-early feature, financial education content, and award-winning customer service, Monzo focuses on solving problems and changing lives rather than simply selling products. As a Staff Backend Engineer (L60), you will be part of Monzo’s technology and engineering team, which includes around 300 engineers out of a total 2,500 employees, working across collectives such as Core Banking, Business Banking, Wealth, Borrowing, Growth, Payments, Platform, Fincrime, Security, and Expansion. You’ll collaborate with product managers, researchers, designers, analysts, and engineers across disciplines to build and support impactful customer-facing products while contributing to distributed systems, resilient backend software, and data-driven product development. The role involves using Go for application code, Cassandra for storage, Kafka for messaging, Envoy Proxy for RPC, Kubernetes and Docker for services, AWS for infrastructure, and React for internal dashboards. Monzo offers flexibility with remote or London-based work, ad hoc in-person collaboration, and a strong culture of autonomy and balance, supporting individual schedules and family needs. Ideal candidates will bring strong backend engineering experience, product mindset, knowledge of distributed systems, and skills in strongly typed languages such as Go, Java, C, or Scala. The hiring process includes an initial call, a take-home or pair coding exercise, and a final interview with system design and behavioral components. Compensation ranges from £115,000–£150,000 plus stock options, with visa sponsorship and relocation support available, flexible working, a £1,000 learning budget, and additional benefits. Monzo is an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity, inclusion, and enabling everyone to do the best work of their lives.
