Junior Ogunyemi

The eminent entrepreneur and motivational speaker Junior Ogunyemi opens up with TC and explains what it’s like to be an outsider in the UK technology sector.

Today, the United Kingdom has over 42,000 start-ups and almost 10,000 corporate IT companies dispersed across the country competing for the industry’s most extraordinary talent, giving a massive rise in tech jobs, not only in one region but all over the UK. Whether local or international talent, both are highly regarded in the UK, leaving only one question in all immigrant’s minds: what it’s like to be an outsider in the UK technology landscape?

In our attempt to shed more light on this burning question, we sought an insider’s perspective from a serial entrepreneur, inspirational speaker and the CEO & Co-Founder of ZipiStream, Mr Junior Ogunyemi. He has been helping many people succeed by removing the time-consuming struggle of building engagement with the audience for podcasters to focus their time and effort on recording great content. During a conversation with Technologist Confidant, Mr Junior Ogunyemi opens up about his opinions from an employer’s perspective on the technology sector in the UK, the global picture, challenges, scope, and more. Below are the insightful excerpts from the interview.

TC: What do you think about UK’s position in the global market concerning the technology sector?

Junior: I think the UK is in a very dominant position. Over the last two decades, there have been several new government initiatives introduced to fuel growth. This has resulted in huge investments being initiated in the UK technology firms and rapid growth of the ecosystem. If you live or work in the UK, it’s the most exciting time to be involved in tech.

TC: What are the benefits of joining the UK’s technology sector?

Junior: There are opportunities in abundance. Hundreds of start-up accelerators have introduced a flood of new and innovative tech firms that are springing up across the UK. This has attracted more investment and created more jobs. The reputation the UK has means employers are demanded to pay more for quality candidates.

TC: What problems do you think people from other countries face when they come to the UK as an employee?

Junior: I can imagine adapting to a new culture is hard enough. If you add the pressure of succeeding in a new role and learning fast on the job, then it can be a challenge choosing to work abroad. It will undoubtedly take a lot of resilience to succeed.

TC: What are your suggestions for people who are aspiring to come to the UK for a career?

Junior: You have a unique gift that you are bringing with you, don’t hide that because it makes you stand out. It’s an asset and part of your brand. Do not leave that behind; the UK needs it. Other than that, my only other advice would be to bring a raincoat!

TC: As an industry leader, what message do you want to give to the Global technology audience?

Junior: The technology we create and the services we provide are a reflection of us. In every email we send, or every product sold, we remind the clients of our character & values. Never forget that. Let’s keep building things that make us better humans.

TC: There are technology experts already in the UK. What is your suggestion for them to grow their career?

Junior: Be very active on social media. Pick a platform and build your audience there. There is no point in being an expert and keeping your expertise hidden all to yourself.
